Chapter Eleven

After our meditation and chat, I left Gwendolyn to prepare for her clients and strolled into the kitchen to grab more coffee. Deep in thought, I was startled to see Wendy sitting at the kitchen table, nursing a cup of tea.

I’d assumed she’d stayed upstairs, but she’d snuck up on me before, so I shouldn’t have been surprised. It left me wondering how long she’d been in here and how much of the conversation she’d heard. The thought of her overhearing me question her innocence in Harry’s murder was disconcerting, to say the least.

Trying to act naturally, I said a quick hello, but kept moving, afraid of what errand she’d have for me next.

Back in the office, I considered what I should do now. After all, if Gwendolyn had been guilty, she could have already come up with someone else to pin it on, just as someone could be trying to pin it on her. She could even use her “expertise” and claim she’d tapped into the universal wisdom to get Ross looking in a different direction. It might not ultimately work, but it could stall the process. Or heck, she could just disappear. The fact she’d stuck around when Ross couldn’t legally keep her here had to count for something, didn’t it?

Ross seemed to think he had the murderer pegged and just needed to come up with more substantial evidence before he arrested my friend. This new evidence Crystal had shared could be just what he required. Something needed to be done, and soon.

Even though Christian didn’t want me to get involved, I was, and I owed it to Gwendolyn to help get her out of this sticky situation. Besides, Christian would benefit from getting Harry’s murder wrapped up too. Once the real murderer was behind bars, we could finally be rid of our guests and get back to normal.

Working on the assumption Gwendolyn was being framed, I began seriously speculating who, other than Brian, would have something major against Gwendolyn. Though no one else came to mind, I’d learned over the last year that not everyone lived by the same golden rule I did. And, there were some good old-fashioned crazies out there too, and they could be clever at putting on a façade of normality.

Besides Brian Potter, I wanted to talk to Susan and Trevor Wills. Even though Susan hadn’t been at the séance, everyone knew her son Trevor didn’t make a move without her say-so. If Trevor were involved in Harry’s murder, it would have been his mom who’d put him up to it.

The other locals who’d attended, Evan Fowler and Reverend Holt, I could always talk to later, if I needed to widen my search. For now, the fact that Brian clearly still held a grudge towards Gwendolyn, and Susan and Trevor hated Harry, made them my best suspects. Since the other two young men at the séance weren’t easily accessible, and since Gwendolyn didn’t know them, I’d wait to locate them if I hit walls with the local folks.
